Quilled Rainbow Rooster Abstract

Quilled Rainbow Rooster Abstract

I didn’t intend to make a quilled rainbow rooster abstract today, but it happened. 🙂 In fact, what I’d struck out to do was use up some scraps I had leftover from making my latest batch of quilled mini rainbow spirals. I thought that they’d […]

Abstract Hybrid Quilled Flow Art | Red Jupiter

Pink Gilded Whimsical Quilled Owl

Pink Gilded Whimsical Quilled Owl

Owls are one of the most popular quilling subjects. I’m not sure if it’s because people just simply love owls or if they lend well as a subject. It’s probably a combination of both. In the world of quilling you see two types of owls: […]

Pre-Cut Quilling Monogram Letter Templates

Last night’s Saturday Night Movie in my Facebok quilling group called “Contemporary Quilling” I went over outlining and edge-work as well as under-painting and “crossing over.” I was surprised at the response (or should I say interest) in pre-cut monogram templates. As a result, I […]

Quilled Frog Autopsy

Quilled Frog Autopsy

For some reason I am drawn to the macabre. Not that I truly consider my Frog Autopsy piece macabre. In fact, to me it's as normal as getting up in the morning and having a cup of coffee. I guess being raised on a farm gave me a taste for things that others find offensive and distasteful. My love for biology doesn't end at artwork, but we won't get into that since some get a little squeamish when facing the realities of life.

The inspiration for Frog Autopsy came while I was on a taxidermy kick. I had planned to get my certification in European Skull mounts (it never happened). And once my brain starts working, it just goes off on tangents that I have little control over. In this case, the tangent wound up on an idea to depict an autopsy. One of my original ideas was to do an Alien Autopsy scene but... I just couldn't fully visualize it. Then I considered a pig. But the pig didn't feel quite right at that moment in time. The logical next subject was this frog. I do plan to do a pig later on, but I a still working out the details of how to make the innards pop against the similarly colored flesh. This will be a challenge to tackle.

I began by researching frog dissection. Frog Autopsy isn't "anatomically" correct, but it has interesting details and was created with a painstaking process that involved forming organs to fit a specific sized cavity and building in a 3D manner. I used some beautiful handmade paper for the skin that I think brings a feminine touch to the stark brutality of the dissection process.

I am currently creating a second Frog Autopsy to sell as it's been so very popular. Check back soon for the product listing.
