This is a “duplicate” piece based off a hummingbird with fuchsia I did this spring. I have to admit that I don’t like making duplicates of my work, so instead of fuchsia, I went with gaura for this one. I wanted to change up how I did the hummingbird, but my client wanted the teardrops. I don’t mind it, but I’d like to make one using the technique I did with my cardinal (all combed), for thinner, denser “feathering.”

Construction

I made this entire piece with 1/8″ strips from Quilled Creations. I used three shades of pink, the lightest, the next one up, and a rosier/brighter shade. The camera didn’t capture the colors very well as the bright pink isn’t quite as bright as it looks in this picture. Some day I’ll figure out the perfect settings to photograph quilling so they not only show the density and shadowing, but the true colors as well.

The piece is rather self explanatory. I laid paper on it’s side to make the dark green stems. I made leaf shapes in leaf green for the leaves. For the buds I just made a very narrow teardrop and looped a piece of leaf green on either side for some greenery. The flower petal were made with a central “quill” that I then wrapped a darker pink around. I first made a teardrop, then grasped the end with my tweezers and bent the paper back toward the tweezers to round it out and leave a “stem.” Te pistils/stamen were made with four pieces of white stacked and glue at the bottom, then cut in half the long way. I also nipped the very end into a point. I glued this entire thing into a small cup I made with another pink using the Mini Mold. I painted the tips with orange marker. I glued the flowers down both on top of the leaves/stems and on the paper. Some overlap both for depth.
