Owls are one of the most popular quilling subjects. I'm not sure if it's because people just simply love owls or if they lend well as a subject. It's probably a combination of both. In the world of quilling you see two types of owls: the realistic ones and the whimsical ones. Over the past few years I have created four other owls. Two when I first began quilling and two as an intermediate quiller. And, interestingly enough, two of them were realistic and two were whimsical. Since my last owl I feel as though my mastery of quilling has grow significantly. I'm more comfortable with my own style and a more confident artist in general. When this customer contacted me to ask for an owl, I assumed she wanted a realistic one like the two Great Horned Owls I made in 2015. It's a good thing I clarified early on as she was looking for pink gilded whimsical quilled owl, something I hadn't done since way back in 2014.
I really enjoyed making this piece. I don't normally work with 1/8" paper, but I had to for this as to get it to fit inside these beautiful double-matted gallery frames I found, it had to be shallow. My go-to paper depth is 1/4" so this was a big change for me. I still prefer the 1/4" because of it's bold depth and shadowing, but the 1/8" has a delicate look that I also find appealing - yet difficult to work with. 🙂
The pink shades in his outer eye-rings and flowers are the gilded papers from JJ Quilling. If you haven't tried their gilded paper, you're missing out on a special treat! You can order it directly from JJ Quilling in London or from Custom Quilling here in the US. I can't express how beautiful the gilded paper is. It adds a unique touch to artwork even if it's used sparingly. There is nothing more wonderful than popping in a few strips here and there and watching it glint when you see it from the right angle. They even do custom cuts so if you want something really unique (and don't mind ordering packs of five), you could really make a statement with their gilded paper.
The rest of the paper is from Quilled Creations. They are the first company I ever purchased paper from and they are the ones that I continue to go back to time after time. Their paper is thick and luxurious, but my favorite item of theirs is the Savvy Slotted Quilling tool. See my review here.
