One of the things you can always count on with me is that most of my art comes directly from my heart. I am constantly inspired by experiences and things I see. In the case of my Quilled Black Heart of Friendship, I was unfortunately given the idea because of a bizarre and painful experience I had with someone that I had considered a friend. My mind kept showing me an image of a blackened heart. It was the only explanation I could come up with for the way things turned out. So, in an attempt to work through the mixed feelings and hurt and shock - I decided to turn my mental images into a piece of art.
At first I was just going to create an anatomically correct black heart. And I spent a considerable amount of time developing a technique that would allow for a 3D appearance to the heart itself. I really love the end result. It has depth and curves and a very unique overall appearance. The original plan for the background was to spatter it with red acrylic paint to simulate blood. But after a failed attempt at creating just the right look for this, I spied a roll of handmade paper I had on hand and decided to go gothic - back to my 90's girl roots - and make red roses instead.
The roses made from this paper are just stunning. they are rich and soft and crinkled in all the right places. I nested them around the heart - rebuilding it several times until I found just the right combination for each of the sides. I was going to leave it at that but I felt like it needed something more, so I dug out some 1/8" black strips and began curling them like ribbons and experimenting with running them up inside the "arteries." After I'd placed a few I realized that the black "blood" took the piece to a whole new level and build these paper streams of black blood around the entire piece.
I can't explain how amazing this art looks like in person. Pictures don't do it justice at all. I hope that someone, some day appreciates it as much as I do and wants to own it. I've made both the original art and high-quality digitally mastered prints available on my Etsy shop.
