Quilled Black Widow Spider
This quilled black widow spider was one of my first ever commissioned pieces. Boy was I nervous while creating it!
It 5×7 and on a lavender background at the client’s request.
I made the body of the spider with 1/4″ black paper formed in a tight coil which I pushed my thumb into to create a dome. Notice that the center of the coil is open. I made this by wrapping the paper around a paintbrush which seemed to have the “right” diameter for what I wanted. Once it was in the correct shape and had sufficient dome-i-ness, I glued the entire inside. Then I created two red triangles to give it its signature hourglass marking.
The legs were made with 1/4″ paper that I cut a diagonal piece out of to make them taper to a fine point towards the tips.
It was a very simple design and I think I captured the overall shape and body dimensions of the black widow spider well.
